Focusing on the Boy Child: His Right, His Well-being — A Call to Action Ahead of May 16

In the heart of every community, there is a boy learning what it means to be strong, to be enough, and to belong. But far too often, that boy is left to navigate a world that rarely sees his tears, seldom listens to his fears, and almost never asks, “Are you okay?” A world that demands so much but gives very little.

As May 16th — the International Day of the Boy Child — draws near, The Adams Project Africa is raising its voice with clarity and conviction:

“It is time to focus on the boy child.”
“It is time to affirm his rights.”
“It is time to invest in his well-being.”

Why This Day Matters

The International Day of the Boy Child was instituted to shine a light on the unique challenges faced by boys around the globe. It is more than just a date on the calendar—it is a call to justice.

While global development efforts have rightly emphasized the girl child, the boy child must not be left behind. Across Africa and beyond, boys silently battle with immense societal pressures: the demand to be tough, the stigma of vulnerability, and the invisibility of emotional pain.

Many grow up without positive male role models, safe spaces to speak freely, or guidance on healthy masculinity. And in this silence, too many fall into depression, substance abuse, crime, or cycles of violence.

His Right. His Well-being.

At The Adams Project Africa, we anchor our advocacy for the boy child on two core pillars: his rights and his well-being.

  • Every boy has the right to safety—freedom from abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
  • Every boy has the right to education—not just academic learning, but life skills, emotional intelligence, and values that build strong, compassionate men.
  • Every boy has the right to expression—to cry, to ask questions, to be heard.
  • Every boy has the right to support—from families, schools, and communities that recognize his struggles and are committed to his growth.

And his well-being is non-negotiable. Physical health, mental health, identity, and self-esteem are not luxuries; they are the foundation of the future leaders, fathers, and citizens we all depend on.

What We’re Doing — And What You Can Do
